Can a bent wheel be repaired?

Many bent wheels can be straightened and refinished. A wheel that has cracked or been badly deformed may not be safe to repair, and the position of the bend is the first thing we look at.

Inner rim or outer lip?

An alloy wheel has an outer lip, the edge you can see from the side of the car, and an inner barrel that sits behind the spokes. Damage at the outer lip is the most common result of a kerb strike, and a flat or slightly flared lip is often a straightforward straightening job. A bend on the inner barrel is harder to spot, because you rarely see it. It tends to show up as a vibration, and the wheel can look perfect from the front.

Signs your wheel is bent

Signs your wheel is bent

A bulge in the sidewall means the tyre took the same impact that bent the wheel. The tyre may be damaged inside and should be replaced, even if the wheel itself can be saved. Straightening the wheel will not fix the tyre. If you have a bulge, avoid motorway speeds until a tyre specialist has checked it.
  • The steering wheel shakes or the car pulls at certain speeds.
  • A tyre loses pressure slowly, without a puncture you can find.
  • The edge of the rim looks flattened, flared or out of line.
  • A bulge or lump has appeared on the tyre sidewall.
  • Balancing weights keep coming off, or the wheel will not balance.

Quick answers

Is a bent wheel the same as a buckled wheel?
Yes, they describe the same type of damage. Buckled usually means the whole rim has gone out of round, while bent often means a local flat spot or flared lip.
Can I drive on a bent wheel?
Only a short way, and gently. A bent wheel can affect handling, wear the tyre unevenly and lose air, so get it checked before any long journey.
Will a straightened wheel balance properly?
Yes, in most cases. Balancing after straightening is part of the job, and it is included in the price with no extra charge.
How much does it cost?
The price depends on how far the rim is bent, where it sits and whether the wheel needs refinishing. Send a photo and we reply within 24 hours with a free quote.
