How long do diamond cut alloys last?

There is no fixed lifespan, because a diamond cut finish lasts as long as its clear lacquer stays intact. Careful owners can keep the bright face looking good for years, while one chip that lets water underneath can start corrosion that spreads.

What decides how long it lasts

The cut face is bare, polished metal sealed under lacquer. Anything that breaks the lacquer shortens the life of the finish. Our guide to why alloy wheels corrode explains how it spreads once the seal is broken.
  • Kerb contact, which chips or scrapes the lacquer on the rim edge.
  • Stone chips on the spokes and face.
  • Road salt and brake dust sitting on the surface for long periods.
  • Harsh or acidic wheel cleaners, and abrasive brushes or cloths.
  • Damage left unrepaired, which lets water creep underneath.

Signs the finish is failing

Early signs are far easier to put right than lacquer flaking off in sheets. See what diamond cut alloy wheels are for more on spotting them.

Buying a car with diamond cut wheels

Diamond cut faces are easy to inspect, so look before you buy. Damage is not a reason to walk away, but it is a reason to ask for a lower price. Send us photos and we can tell you what the repair involves.
  • View each wheel in daylight, as showroom lighting hides marks.
  • Check the spoke edges and rim lip, where damage shows first.
  • Look for cloudy patches, white specks or lifting lacquer.
  • Run a finger over the face to feel for roughness.
  • Ask whether any wheel has been repaired before.

When to act

Act at the first cloudy patch or lifted edge. Driving on with damaged lacquer lets corrosion spread under it, and the deeper it goes the more metal has to be cleaned out before the face is re-cut. A quick photo to us costs nothing.

What repair involves

We strip the wheel to bare metal, repair the damage, re-cut the face on our own CNC lathe and seal it with fresh lacquer. Diamond cut repair takes 2 working days. It always needs the workshop, as it cannot be done on a mobile visit. Re-cutting removes a thin layer of metal, so the number of times it can be done is limited, and we assess that from your photos.

Quick answers

How long do diamond cut alloys last?
It depends on the lacquer, and how well the wheels are looked after. Rinsing salt and dirt off and repairing chips early gives the finish the best chance.
Do diamond cut wheels peel?
The lacquer can lift once it has been chipped or has moisture beneath it. Catching it at the cloudy stage makes repair easier.
Are diamond cut alloys high maintenance?
They need gentle cleaning and early repair of chips, but no special routine beyond that.
Can a diamond cut wheel be repaired more than once?
Often it can, but each re-cut removes a little metal, so it cannot go on forever. We check the wheel from your photo. Our guide on how many times a wheel can be refurbished covers this.
Is a car with diamond cut wheels a bad buy?
No. Check the faces for damage before you buy, and allow for repair if you find any.
