Powder coating vs painting alloy wheels

Powder coating is cured in an oven and gives a hard, even finish, which suits a full refinish of all four wheels. Wet paint is sprayed and lacquered, and suits repairs, partial work and effects that need a particular finish.

How each finish is applied

For powder coating, dry powder is applied to the bare wheel and cured in an oven. We cure ours at 180°C. For painting, liquid paint is sprayed on and sealed with lacquer. It is the method used when part of a wheel is being finished and for repairs on the car, such as our mobile service.
  • Choose powder coating for a full set that needs a long-lasting new finish or a colour change.
  • Choose paint for a single wheel, a small repair or a job that must be done at your door.
  • Choose either when the wheel is sound and you want the original look back.

Quick answers

Can any wheel be powder coated?
Most alloy wheels can. We confirm from your photo.
Which is cheaper?
It depends on the wheel and the finish. Send a photo for a free quote, or see the cost guide.
How long does it take?
Powder coating takes 36 to 48 hours, the same as a standard refurbishment. Calliper painting takes 24 hours.
Will it chip?
Any finish can chip on a hard stone strike. A well-prepared powder coat resists chips better than most paint, and we can repair a chip if it happens.
