Damage, cracks and bends

Signs your alloy wheels need refurbishing

Your alloy wheels need refurbishing when the finish is scuffed, peeling, corroded or dull, or when kerb damage has marked the rim. Vibration, air loss or a visible bend point to damage beyond the finish, so get the wheel checked.

Cosmetic signs

Check all four wheels, including the one on the kerb side and the rears. Rear wheels are easy to overlook, and damage often builds up slowly on all of them. These are finish problems. They affect looks first, but a chip that exposes bare metal lets moisture in, so early repair keeps the damage small.
  • Scuffs and scrapes along the outer lip from kerb contact.
  • Paint chips on the spokes or face that show bare metal.
  • Dull, faded or stained paint that does not clean up.
  • Lacquer peeling or flaking on a diamond cut face.
  • A mismatched set after one wheel was repaired or replaced.

Corrosion signs

Corrosion signs

Corrosion is the sign most people miss, because it starts small. Corrosion shows as white or grey powdery spots, bubbles under the paint or lacquer, and rough patches that spread over time. It often starts at a chip or along the rim edge, and road salt and brake dust speed it up. Read why alloy wheels corrode to see how it develops. Surface corrosion usually repairs well when caught early. Deep pitting or flaking in sheets needs more work.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my alloy wheels need refurbishing?

When should alloy wheels be refurbished?
There is no set age. Refurbish when the finish is damaged, ideally before chips let corrosion spread.
Is kerb damage worth repairing?
Usually yes. Minor kerb marks are often straightforward to refinish, and early repair keeps the damage from spreading. See how to fix kerb rash.
Can I refurbish just one wheel?
