Brake callipers

When do brake callipers need replacing?

Callipers have no fixed replacement age or mileage. They are replaced when they stick, leak or stop working properly, and a qualified mechanic should make that call. A calliper that only looks tired is a different matter, and that can be repainted.

Signs of a brake problem

Any of these needs a mechanic. Do not drive on brakes you think are faulty. Many callipers last for years, and some outlast the car, so there is no set interval. What matters is how they have been treated.
  • The car pulls to one side when you brake
  • One wheel is much hotter than the others after a drive
  • Uneven brake pad wear from one side to the other
  • A brake that sticks or drags
  • Fluid leaking around the calliper
  • A brake warning light

Quick answers

Can I paint callipers that are faulty?
No. Have the fault fixed first. Paint should only go on callipers that work normally.
Is calliper paint heat resistant?
Yes. We use heat-resistant paint, which is designed for the temperatures brakes reach.
Do you replace callipers?
No. We paint them. A mechanic can replace them, and we can paint them afterwards if you wish.
How can I tell if a calliper is sticking?
A wheel that is much hotter than the others, a burning smell after a drive or the car pulling to one side are common signs. Have it checked by a mechanic straight away.
