Why a flaking finish keeps going

Once the coating lifts at one point, water gets in behind it and pushes the edge further back, and road salt speeds that up through winter. Touching up the chips only hides the edge for a while. A full strip and recoat removes the failing layer altogether and stops the flaking spreading.

A cured powder coat stands up well to chips and brake dust, but dirt and road salt still settle on it. Rinse the wheels regularly, more often through winter when the roads are gritted, using a cleaner made for coated alloys and a soft brush that reaches between the spokes. Give each wheel a quick look whenever you wash the car. A chip or kerb mark spotted early is a small job, and catching it stops water getting under the coating. They can. Each wheel is stripped back to bare metal and any damage is repaired before the powder goes on, so the state of the old finish doesn't carry through.

What should the photo show?

One shot of the whole wheel, plus the colour or finish you want and your reg or make and model. Sharper photos taken in daylight give us a firmer price.

Will a photo show what the job involves?

In most cases, yes. The picture shows how far corrosion has spread and whether there are kerb scuffs or pits to repair before coating, and the reply sets that out alongside the price.
