Why every wheel goes back to bare metal

A new finish is only as sound as the surface underneath it. Paint or powder laid over an old coat takes on every weak spot in that coat, so wherever the old layer is lifting or corroding, the new one follows it and starts to peel. We take the whole finish off first, right down to clean alloy. That exposes any pitting or corrosion hiding under the paint, so it gets dealt with before anything goes back on. The fresh coat then bonds straight to the metal, which is what stops it peeling later.
