Why a flaking finish keeps going

When a section of coating lifts, water gets in under the edge and loosens the finish around it, so the flaking spreads a little further with every wet spell. Touching it up only hides the problem for a while. A full strip back to bare metal and a new coat stops it, because none of the failing layer is left behind.

Powder coating starts with a wheel stripped to bare metal, with any pits or kerb scuffs repaired. Dry powder is then sprayed evenly over the whole wheel before it goes into our on-site oven at 180°C. The heat bonds the powder to the metal and cures it into a thicker, harder coat that copes well with chips and brake dust. Before you send the photo

Can wheels that are already flaking be powder coated?

They can, since the old finish comes off entirely before any powder goes on. Whatever damage turns up once the wheel is bare gets repaired first, so the state of the old coat makes no difference.

What should the photo show?

Get the whole wheel in the frame and tell us the colour or finish you're after, along with the reg or make and model. A clear shot in daylight lets us give a firmer price sooner.

Can you tell from a photo what the job involves?

In most cases a photo is enough. It shows how far any corrosion has spread and whether the rims need repair before coating, so the reply covers the price and the work involved.
