Wet roads and road salt do the most harm to a wheel whose lacquer is already broken. Salt sits in the scrape, holds moisture against the bare alloy and lets corrosion spread under the finish all winter. A mark that looked minor in October can be flaking by spring, so a check before the cold weather arrives is worth making. Rinsing the wheels now and then through winter washes the salt off, and a look afterwards shows whether anything new has appeared. If it has, send a photo and we'll tell you what it needs.
