Is powder coating worth it?

Patching a flaking wheel only hides the problem for a while. A full strip and recoat gives you an even finish in the original colour or a new one, and a cured powder coat gives an even, hard-wearing finish. Questions worth asking before you book

Is the wheel stripped to bare metal? Every wheel we coat is, and the section below explains why that matters.
Where is it cured, and at what temperature? In our own oven at Crown Road, at 180°C.
Can repairs be done first? Scuffs, pitting and rim damage are repaired after stripping, ahead of the coating.

Powder needs clean alloy to hold on to. If it goes over an old finish, it can only be as secure as that layer, and once the old paint or lacquer lets go, the new coat peels away with it. Taking each wheel back to bare metal removes the tired coating, any corrosion creeping beneath it and the dirt that builds up in the corners. The fresh powder then bonds straight to the alloy, and the cure at 180°C sets it hard. It takes longer than spraying over the top, but it's the reason the finish lasts.

When is a wheel better replaced than repaired?

A crack in the wrong place or a badly buckled rim can leave a wheel unsafe to repair. We can usually tell from your photos, and we'll say so before you book anything.

Will the repair show afterwards?

The aim is that it won't, because the coating covers the entire wheel and leaves no repair edge. Any filled scuffs sit under the same layer of powder as the rest of the rim.

What happens if the coated finish isn't what I expected?

There is no extra charge for tyre removal, balancing or storage at the workshop. Payment is on completion, so you see the wheels before you pay a penny. All our work carries a satisfaction guarantee, and anything you're unsure about can be raised when you collect.
