What paint correction is

The clear coat is the top layer of your paint, and it takes all the wear. Automatic car washes, dry wiping and years of sun leave it covered in fine marks that dull the colour underneath. Paint correction takes off a very thin layer of that clear coat with a machine polisher, so the surface is level again and reflects light evenly. Colour and depth come back without any new paint.

Marks it removes

  • Swirl marks, the circular scratches that show up in direct sunlight
  • Light scratches that sit in the clear coat only
  • Holograms left by a previous rushed polish
  • Oxidation, the chalky or faded look on older paint
  • Water spots and light etching from bird droppings

What it can't fix

Polishing works within the clear coat, so a scratch that has gone through to the colour or primer stays visible. A fingernail that catches in the mark is the usual sign. Those marks need a scratch repair, and failed or peeling paint needs paint repair.

How the work goes

Wash and decontaminate

The car is cleaned so grit isn't dragged across the paint during polishing.

Inspect under light

We check each panel and test a small area to see how the paint responds.

Machine polish

Panels are worked section by section until the marks are gone.

Check the finish

We go over the paint again in good light before you collect.

Before a sale or after a repair

A corrected finish photographs well and makes a car look cared for, which helps when you're selling or handing back a lease car. It also suits panels we have just painted. After a bodywork repair, correcting the surrounding paint helps the finish look even across the whole car.

How much does paint correction cost?

It depends on the size of the car and how much marking there is. Send photos and we'll give you a price within 24 hours, with no obligation.

Is paint correction the same as polishing?

Correction is a deeper, more thorough polish aimed at removing defects. Our car polishing page covers lighter work to bring back gloss.

Will it remove every scratch?

It removes marks in the clear coat. Deeper scratches can be softened but stay visible, and we tell you which is which from your photos.

Can you correct paint on a car that has been resprayed?

Yes in most cases, though fresh paint needs time to harden first. Tell us when the work was done and we'll advise.

How long will the car be with you?

Your quote gives the timing for your car, because it varies with the size of the job. See all FAQs
