Why a small chip is worth fixing

A stone flicked up from the road hits hard enough to knock out lacquer, colour and primer in one go. The chip may be the size of a pinhead, but if it reaches bare metal, moisture gets in and rust starts to creep out under the paint around it. Caught early, a chip is a small paint repair. Left through a wet winter, the same chip can become a blistered patch that needs a larger area taking back and repainting.

Where chips appear and what we do about them

Different parts of the car pick up chips in different ways, and the repair changes with them.

Deep scratches and gouges along a car's front wing and bumper

Bonnet and front bumper

The front of the car takes most stone strikes, often as a spread of small chips. A few isolated chips can be touched in, while a dense cluster is usually better repaired as one area so the bonnet looks even.

Door edges

Chips here come from car park knocks and doors opening onto walls or posts. Edges flex and get handled, so the repair is prepared carefully and lacquered to stand up to daily use.

Roof, wings and sills

Chips higher up are often missed until rust shows. Sills and lower wings catch grit thrown up by the wheels, so we check for corrosion before any colour goes on.

Touch-in or SMART repair

Most chips are fixed in one of two ways, and your photo tells us which suits.

Touch-in repair

Touch-in repair

Colour mixed from your paint code is applied into the chip itself, then lacquered. It suits single chips or a handful of small ones where the paint around them is sound. It's the quickest and lowest-cost way to stop rust starting.

SMART repair

SMART repair

For clusters of chips, chips that have started to rust, or damage where a touch-in would still be visible, we prepare a small area around the damage, then prime, colour and blend it into the panel before lacquering. The result is harder to spot and covers more ground. More on SMART repair.

How it works

Send a photo.

One shot of the whole panel and one close-up of the chips, taken in daylight. We reply within 24 hours with a price and the repair that suits.

Book a time.

Call or reply to the quote and we'll agree when you bring the car to Crown Road.

Clean and prepare.

Each chip is cleaned out, and any surface rust is treated so it can't spread under the new paint.

Match the colour.

Paint is mixed from your car's paint code, then applied into the chip or blended across the repair area.

Stone chip repair questions

Chips that only mark the lacquer are cosmetic. Chips that reach bare metal let moisture in and will rust, so it's worth repairing them before winter.

Do stone chips need fixing?

Chips that only mark the lacquer are cosmetic. Chips that reach bare metal let moisture in and will rust, so it's worth repairing them before winter.

Can you match my paint?

Yes. We mix from your car's paint code, which is usually on a sticker in the door shut or under the bonnet. Metallic and pearl colours are matched the same way.

How long does it take?

Minor repairs at the workshop are done within 24 hours. A mobile chip repair usually takes about 2 to 4 hours on the spot.

How do I know if a chip has gone to bare metal?

Look at the centre of the chip. Silver or grey means primer or metal is showing, and orange-brown means rust has started. Your photo shows us which, so the quote covers it. Want to know more first? Read our stone chip repair guide. See all FAQs
