What to look for after a knock

Each of these signs says something different about a wheel or panel.

Scuffed or gouged rim: kerb contact breaks the finish, and a gouge you can feel needs filling.
Lacquer lifting or white spots on a bright face: water and salt are reaching the metal.
Vibration or pulling to one side: a possible bend, so get it checked.
A visible crack: this one needs the workshop.

Most kerb rash happens in the last foot of a parking manoeuvre. Leave a little more room when you pull alongside, and take that final stretch slowly so the tyre touches the kerb before the rim does. If your car has parking sensors or a camera, use them on the kerb side. When you wash the car, look over each rim edge too, because a first scuff caught early is a small repair.

A cosmetic scuff won't stop you using the car. Once the lacquer is broken, though, water and road salt reach the metal and corrosion creeps under the finish, so a small repair now avoids a bigger one later.

My A4 has vibrated since I hit a pothole. Is it the wheel?

A bent rim is one possible cause, and we straighten and weld wheels in-house. Send a photo, tell us what you feel, and check the tyre pressure in the meantime.

How quickly can a scratch on my A4 be fixed?
