What to look for after a knock

These signs help you judge what a wheel or panel needs.

Scuffed or gouged rim: the finish is broken, and a deep gouge needs filling.
Lacquer lifting or white spots on a bright face: water and road salt can reach the metal.
Vibration or pulling to one side: a bend is possible, so have it checked.
A visible crack: only the workshop can deal with this.
A scratch or scuff on a panel: a repair colour-matched to the paint code fixes it.

A repaired rim stays looking right with gentle washing. Use a wheel cleaner that suits alloys, a soft brush and plenty of water, and rinse off brake dust and road salt through the winter. Check each wheel when you wash the car. New damage spotted early is a quick repair, whereas a scuff left alone lets moisture in under the finish.
