Wheels explained

Alloy wheels vs steel wheels

Alloy wheels are lighter and come in far more designs, while steel wheels are heavier and tougher against knocks. Which suits you depends on how you use the car, how much the look matters and how you feel about repairs.

The main differences

Alloy wheels are cast or forged from a lightweight aluminium mix. Steel wheels are pressed and welded from steel sheet, and they are usually painted black or silver and often hidden behind a plastic cover.
The main differences

Where alloy wheels win

The trade-off is that alloy is more likely to crack than bend on a hard strike, and the finish scratches and corrodes if it is chipped. Our guide on why alloy wheels corrode explains what happens once the coating breaks.

Appearance.

Alloys come in a wide range of designs and finishes, and a refinish can change the look of the whole car.

Lower weight.

Less weight at each corner can help ride and handling, though the difference depends on the car and the wheel.

Heat.

Aluminium carries heat away from the brakes well.

Where steel wheels win

The trade-offs are extra weight and a plain appearance. Steel also rusts once the paint is broken, so chips need touching up.

How we repair each type

We refurbish both types at our Crown Road workshop. Alloy wheels are stripped to bare metal, repaired and refinished, with straightening, welding and diamond cut done in-house. Standard refurbishment takes 36 to 48 hours. Steel wheels are refurbished too, and we also work on split rims, chrome and polished wheels. Finishes include gloss, satin, matte and metallic, and we match 99% of factory colours, with custom shades available. See alloy wheel refurbishment and steel wheel refurbishment.

Frequently asked questions

Are alloy wheels better than steel wheels?
Alloys look better and weigh less, which is why most drivers prefer them. Steel wheels are tougher and usually cost less to buy, so they suit hard use and winter sets.
What is the difference between alloy and steel wheels?
Alloy wheels are made from a lightweight aluminium mix and come in many designs. Steel wheels are pressed from sheet steel, are heavier and are usually plain.
Can I swap steel wheels for alloys?
Often yes, but the wheels must suit your car's fixings, size and load rating. Check with a tyre fitter or the manufacturer before buying.
Do alloy wheels rust?
Aluminium does not rust, but it corrodes when the lacquer or paint is chipped. That shows as white spots, bubbling or flaking.
Can steel wheels be refurbished?
Yes. We refurbish steel wheels, and a photo is enough to start a free quote.
