Damage, cracks and bends

Does powder coating damage alloy wheels?

Done properly, powder coating does not damage a sound alloy wheel. The risks come from poor preparation, uncontrolled heat and coating over damage that should have been repaired, so how and where it is done decides the result.

What good preparation looks like

Our standard turnaround is 36 to 48 hours. See alloy wheel powder coating and our explainer on what powder coating on alloy wheels is.

The wheel is stripped to

The wheel is stripped to bare metal, so the powder bonds to the alloy and not to old paint.

Cracks, bends and kerb damage

Cracks, bends and kerb damage are assessed and repaired. We handle welding and straightening in-house.

The powder is applied evenly

The powder is applied evenly and cured in an oven at a controlled temperature and time.

The tyres are refitted and

The tyres are refitted and the wheels balanced afterwards.

Questions to ask any workshop

Questions to ask any workshop

We apply a satisfaction guarantee to all our work.
  • Is the wheel stripped to bare metal before coating?
  • Is damage repaired first, and who does the welding or straightening?
  • What temperature and time is the cure?
  • Are tyre removal and balancing included?
  • What happens if the finish fails?

When to hold off

Coating covers a crack from view without fixing it. If a wheel is cracked, bent, or keeps losing air, have it checked and repaired before any refinishing, and avoid driving hard on it in the meantime. A wheel that is only scuffed or dull can go straight to coating.

Signs something went wrong

A tacky or soft finish can point to an under-cured coat, and flaking or lifting suggests the surface was not prepared well. A wheel that now vibrates may have an unrelated problem, such as a bend or a balance issue. Have it looked at before driving it hard. Our guide to buckled wheels explains what to look for.

Quick answers

Does powder coating weaken alloy wheels?
Not when done by a workshop that controls the cure and prepares the wheel properly. If a wheel was already cracked or bent, coating will not fix it.
Can you powder coat wheels at home?
It is possible with the right oven and kit, but the risks are real. We recommend a workshop for anything on a car.
Will powder coating peel?
Peeling usually points to poor preparation. We strip every wheel to bare metal before refinishing.
Can powder coating be removed or redone?
Yes. A wheel can be stripped back to bare metal and refinished in the same colour or a new one.
Can the wheel be coated with the tyre on?
No. The tyre comes off for coating, and we refit it and balance the wheel afterwards at no extra charge.
