How to tell if your alloy wheels are diamond cut
Look at the face of the wheel in daylight. A diamond cut wheel has a bright, reflective machined surface with fine lines, usually beside painted sections, and a clear lacquer over the top.
Five quick checks
Look for fine circular grooves.
Look for fine circular grooves. Tilt your head in sunlight and a cut face shows faint concentric lines, a bit like a vinyl record.
Check for contrast. Many diamond
Check for contrast. Many diamond cut wheels pair the bright face with painted areas in grey, black or another colour.
Look at the shine. The
Look at the shine. The surface is bright metal under lacquer and often looks more like machined aluminium than paint.
Compare it with a mirror
Compare it with a mirror finish. Chrome and polished wheels look like a smooth mirror, with no visible grooves.
Diamond cut compared with other finishes
The lines are the giveaway. A painted wheel can sparkle, but it does not show a groove pattern across the face.
Signs the finish is failing
The lacquer is the only protection on the bare metal, so problems show there first. Water gets under chips and corrosion spreads along the metal, which is explained in why alloy wheels corrode. Caught early, a wheel is easier to put right. Rinsing off salt and brake dust helps, as does the routine in how to clean alloy wheels.
What to do if yours are diamond cut and damaged
A touch-up pen cannot restore a machined face, because the reflective look comes from the cutting. We strip the wheel to bare metal, repair it, re-cut the face on our CNC lathe and reseal it. The repair takes 2 working days at our Enfield workshop, with no extra charge for tyre removal or balancing. It is a workshop job, since our mobile service covers minor scuffs, kerb damage and paint chips only. Free loan wheels are available subject to stock, so call to check for your make.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my alloy wheels are diamond cut?
Look for a bright machined face with fine circular lines, usually beside painted sections and sealed under clear lacquer. If you are unsure, send us a photo.
What is the difference between diamond cut and polished wheels?
A diamond cut face is machined on a lathe and then lacquered. A polished wheel is buffed to a smooth shine and shows no groove pattern.
Are my wheels diamond cut or just painted?
A painted wheel has an even colour with no fine grooves. A cut face shows concentric lines in the light.
Can I tell from the car's make and model?
Not reliably, as wheel designs and finishes vary with trim and year. Check the handbook or send a photo.
Why do diamond cut wheels go cloudy?
Once the lacquer chips or wears, moisture reaches the bare metal and corrosion starts underneath. Repairing chips early slows that down.
