Wheels explained

Alloy wheel welding explained: is it safe and how long does it last?

Yes, alloy wheels can be welded, and a sound repair done by a specialist can be safe. Whether a particular wheel suits welding depends on where the crack is, so it needs checking in person.

When welding is an option

Welding rebuilds metal along a crack or across a damaged section of the wheel. It suits some damage and not others, and a responsible repairer will turn down a wheel that cannot be made safe. Our guide to whether a cracked alloy wheel can be repaired goes through the cases in more detail.

How a welded repair works

We do the welding and straightening in-house at our Enfield workshop. See straightening and welding for the full process.

The tyre comes off and

The tyre comes off and the wheel is stripped, which shows any cracks the paint was hiding.

The crack is cleaned out

The crack is cleaned out and welded, and the profile is built back up.

If the rim has also

If the rim has also bent, it is straightened after the weld. Straightening an unwelded crack can make it longer, so the order matters.

The wheel is refinished to

The wheel is refinished to match, and the tyre is refitted and balanced.

How long does a welded wheel last

How long does a welded wheel last

There is no fixed lifespan we can quote, because it depends on the quality of the weld, the position of the repair and what the wheel goes through afterwards. A repaired wheel that meets another pothole or kerb is as exposed as any other. All our work carries a satisfaction guarantee. A few habits help a repaired wheel last.
  • Check tyre pressures regularly, as a slow leak can be the first sign of a problem.
  • Keep an eye out for new hairline marks around the repaired area.
  • Get the wheel looked at after any heavy impact.
  • Rinse off road salt and brake dust, as our guide to protecting alloy wheels explains.

What affects the cost

The cost depends on the length and position of the crack, whether the wheel is also bent, and how much refinishing the wheel needs afterwards. We do not list prices. Send a photo and we reply within 24 hours with a price and what the repair involves. Welding is workshop work. Our mobile service covers minor scuffs, kerb damage and paint chips only. Free loan wheels are available subject to stock, so call to check for your make.

Frequently asked questions

Can alloy wheels be welded?
Yes, some can. A single crack at the rim edge is the usual candidate, while cracks in the spokes or hub area usually mean replacement.
Is welding alloy wheels safe?
It can be when the crack suits welding and the repair is checked afterwards. Where it does not, a good repairer will say the wheel needs replacing.
Can you weld a cracked alloy wheel yourself?
We would not advise it. Wheels are safety parts, and the repair needs proper equipment, inspection and finishing. Have it done by a specialist.
Does a welded wheel need balancing?
Yes. Balancing is part of the job, with no extra charge for tyre removal, balancing or storage.
How long does a wheel weld repair take?
We confirm the timing when we quote, as it depends on the damage. Standard refurbishment takes 36 to 48 hours.
