Costs and value

Is alloy wheel refurbishment worth it?

In most cases yes, when the wheel is structurally sound and the damage is cosmetic, because refurbishment restores the look of the car without buying new alloys. It is not worth it when a wheel is cracked beyond repair or bent too far to straighten safely, and a free photo quote tells you which side yours falls on.

When refurbishment makes sense

For a car you are about to sell, see repairing alloy wheels before selling your car.
  • Kerb rash, scuffs and scratches on the face of the wheel.
  • Peeling lacquer, flaking paint or early corrosion.
  • A diamond cut face that has gone cloudy or started to lift.
  • A set that no longer matches, because one wheel has been damaged.
  • A car going back on lease or up for sale, where tired wheels stand out.
  • Wheels that are hard to source, or a design you want to keep.

When replacement is the better call

When replacement is the better call

Some damage changes the answer. A crack through the spoke or rim, a bend that has stretched the metal, or a wheel that has already been repaired several times may be safer replaced. Our guide to repairing or replacing alloy wheels goes through each case, and how many times a wheel can be refurbished covers repeat work. A wheel that vibrates at speed, keeps losing air or has a visible crack needs checking before it goes back on the road. Do not wait for it to fail.

How to decide

Our quote is free, with no obligation, and comes back within 24 hours. Standard refurbishment takes 36 to 48 hours, and free loan wheels are available subject to stock, so call to check for your make.

What affects the outcome

What affects the outcome

Everything is done in-house at our Crown Road workshop, from stripping to bare metal through to powder coating and balancing. See alloy wheel refurbishment for the full process.

Does refurbishment last?

A wheel stripped to bare metal and properly refinished gives you the original wheel with a fresh finish. How long it stays that way depends on how it is treated afterwards. Rinsing off salt and brake dust and repairing chips early keeps it looking good, and how to protect alloy wheels covers the routine.

Quick answers

Is it worth refurbishing alloy wheels before selling a car?
Often yes. Clean, undamaged wheels make a car look better cared for, and a buyer is less likely to question the rest. Photos let us tell you what is needed.
Is it worth refurbishing one wheel or all four?
If only one wheel is damaged, one can be done, and we match it to the existing finish. If the set is tired or you want a new colour, all four gives an even result.
Is a refurbished wheel as good as a new one?
The metal underneath is the original wheel, refinished from bare metal. Provided the wheel is sound, it should look as it did when new.
Can I drive without the wheels while they are done?
Free loan wheels are available subject to stock. Call to check for your make.
How do I know if a wheel is beyond repair?
Cracks and serious bends are the usual reasons. Send a photo and we tell you what we can fix and what should be replaced.
